Really, the french quit bulding the canal in 1886′ also the before the americans could go into panama the had to sign the Hay-Bunau varilla treaty with Panama not colombia…the “revolution” i reckon you are talking about is the thousand day civil war linking the “conservadores and liberales” that was fought thru out colombia (at the moment panama was still part of it) panama got tired of been part of colombia and got its independence on Nov 3 1903
@poonwheels NO!! Roosevelt started negotiations with the French (who had started to build it, but quit), and Colombian government in1880. Within Colombia here was a revolution, and a new government system was born for Colombia. Roosevelt reassumed negotiations with the NEW government, ending in the U.S. paying $40 Million for it.
Having cruised owing to it and then read of its history I’m certain this is the greatest feat of physical engineering of all time. Whatever the difficulties of constructing the GW of China, they didn’t have to contend with yellow fever, landslides, year-long humidity, inadequate equipment and cutting a 9- mile direct owing to the Continental divide. Not persuaded ? Check out my vids on this.
